Terms & Conditions

Effective October 31, 2026 · Version 2026-10-31. These Terms & Conditions apply to the Afterlight news website at afterlightnews.com, its installable web app and its community features (together, the “Service”). “Afterlight,” “we,” “us” and “our” refer to the publisher operating Afterlight news.

Contact for these terms, privacy, corrections, rights complaints and appeals: support@afterlightnews.com. Afterlight news is the publication name. No registered copyright-notice agent is represented by this general support address.

1. Understanding and accepting these terms

By using the Service, you acknowledge its opinion and commentary purpose and agree to these terms to the extent permitted by applicable law. If you do not agree, do not use its interactive features. Creating a community account requires an affirmative acceptance of these terms and the community rules. Your mandatory legal rights are not waived by visiting the site. Our Privacy Notice, Editorial Standards and Community Rules explain related practices.

2. Opinion, commentary and factual context

Afterlight news is an independent opinion, news analysis and commentary publication. Stories, editorials, discussions, interviews and other commentary may express the opinions, interpretations and judgments of their authors, hosts, guests, contributors, workers, employees, editors, executives or chief executive officer. An individual’s views do not necessarily represent every contributor or an official organizational position. Community posts express their authors’ views and are not endorsed simply because they appear here.

We aim to be as accurate and factual as reasonably possible based on the information and sources available when content is prepared. Factual statements, quotations, allegations and opinion are different things; an opinion label does not turn a factual assertion into an opinion or excuse a false statement. Allegations should be attributed and not treated as established findings. Readers should consider the supporting evidence, original sources, dates and context.

3. Research, sources and original work

Our commentary may draw on our own research, source assessment and investigations where actually conducted, as well as public records, official statements, interviews, publicly available reporting and other lawful sources. We identify firsthand investigation when it occurs; we do not imply that reading other reporting is firsthand reporting. Public availability alone does not establish accuracy or a right to reproduce material.

Our editorial policy is to write our own articles and commentary, not copy or republish other publishers’ articles or stories. We may discuss, criticize, link to and form our own opinions about facts and claims described in other reporting, with appropriate attribution. Any limited quotation or third-party media must have a valid legal basis, such as permission, a license or an applicable exception. Attribution is not a substitute for permission where permission is required. We do not claim ownership of third-party reporting, trademarks or licensed assets.

Articles are original writing based on the cited sources, which readers should consult to verify facts. Analysis is labeled as analysis. Publication does not guarantee accuracy, independent verification or professional review.

4. Dates, changes and corrections

Content reflects information available at its stated date and may become incomplete or outdated. Publication dates, source dates and event dates can differ. We may correct, clarify, update or remove material. Material corrections should identify the relevant change. We do not guarantee that every page will be continuously updated. Offline downloads preserve an older edition; they are not live updates.

To request a correction, identify the page, the specific statement, your proposed correction and supporting sources. Do not put sensitive personal information in a public forum. Send correction or legal concerns to support@afterlightnews.com. Forum reports reach moderators about community content.

5. Information, not emergency or professional advice

The Service is for general information, discussion and education. It is not an official emergency-alert service, military source, evacuation authority or substitute for qualified medical, legal, financial, engineering or other professional advice. The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic assessment, not a literal countdown; unofficial DEFCON estimates are not official military status. Maps and scenarios may be illustrative and do not predict a particular event.

Preparedness checklists, calculators and off-grid guides are starting points. They do not certify safety, water quality, legal compliance or readiness. Conditions, equipment and household needs vary. Follow relevant local emergency instructions, qualified professional advice and equipment manufacturers’ instructions. Do not delay emergency assistance because of content here.

6. Our position on rights, the law and violence

Afterlight news supports the constitutional rights of the people, including freedom of speech, the right to keep and bear arms, and due process of law, and we report on the legal and political debates around those rights. Supporting a right is not support for breaking the law. We do not approve of, encourage or condone unlawful conduct or violence of any kind.

Nothing on this site, including articles, analysis, preparedness guides and community posts, is an instruction, invitation or encouragement to commit a crime, to resist lawful authority by force, or to harm any person. Obey the laws where you live. A law that is being challenged in court generally remains in force unless and until a court or legislature changes it, and a ruling that is stayed or under appeal may not yet have any effect.

Coverage of firearms law explains court cases and legislation for general information. It is not legal advice. Firearm laws differ by state and locality and change often; ask a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction about your own situation. Community posts that promote violence, threats or illegal activity are removed, and accounts that post them may be suspended.

7. Community eligibility and account security

Community accounts are for people aged 18 or older who can legally agree to these terms. Do not impersonate another person or misrepresent your authority. Keep account credentials and recovery codes private. You are responsible for activity you authorize through your account and should report suspected misuse through the publisher’s available support channel.

Accounts use a username, password and recovery code. You may add an email address to receive password-reset links. Losing your password and recovery code without a saved email address may prevent recovery. We may restrict registration or access to prevent abuse. Account access is not a promise of uninterrupted service.

8. Acceptable use

Do not use the Service for threats, harassment, hate speech, doxxing, impersonation, fraud, scams, illegal transactions, exploitation, spam, malware or instructions intended to facilitate violence or illegal harm. Do not publish information you know is false, confidential material you lack authority to share, or copyrighted content you have no right to post. Respect privacy and the rights of others. Do not bypass access controls, abuse reporting tools, disrupt the Service or automate requests in a way that damages or materially interferes with it. Lawful criticism and good-faith disagreement remain welcome.

9. Your contributions and permission to operate the forum

You retain rights you own in your original contributions. By submitting content, you represent that you have the necessary rights and give Afterlight a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, host, reproduce, display, distribute and format that content as reasonably necessary to operate, secure, back up and moderate the Service. This permission does not transfer ownership or authorize us to sell your contribution as a separate product. Display names and contributions may be public, quoted by other users or retained in ordinary backups and moderation records.

We may remove content from public display when appropriate. Removal does not guarantee deletion of lawful backups, security/moderation records or copies independently made by others. Retention and privacy requests are subject to applicable law and the Privacy Notice.

10. Moderation, reports and account restrictions

Rule-based screening holds first contributions and some suspected spam, abuse or personal contact information for human review. Screening is limited, can make mistakes and does not establish whether a claim is true. We do not promise to review every contribution before it is visible or to respond within a particular time.

Members may report a topic or reply with a specific reason. Reports go to a private moderation queue; report counts do not automatically establish wrongdoing or cause removal. Moderators may approve or remove posts and lock discussions. Administrators may suspend accounts or change moderator roles. Actions are logged. We may take proportionate action for rule violations, legal obligations, security threats or service abuse. For a moderation appeal, email support@afterlightnews.com with your username, the post link or identifier, the decision you are appealing and your reasons. Appeals are reviewed in context; we do not promise a particular outcome.

11. Intellectual property and rights complaints

Afterlight’s original writing, designs and other protectable materials belong to their respective rights holders. Personal reading, ordinary linking and lawful uses remain allowed. These terms do not restrict rights granted by law, including applicable fair-use rights. Do not pass our work off as your own or republish protected material without a valid legal basis.

A rights complaint should identify the protected work, the exact disputed URL/material, the complainant’s authority and contact details, and the basis for the complaint. Send rights complaints to support@afterlightnews.com with the subject “Copyright or rights concern.” No DMCA safe-harbor status, registered agent or special statutory notice process is claimed merely by publishing these terms. Repeated or serious infringement may lead to removal or account restriction.

12. Advertising, sponsorship and external services

No advertising network or third-party analytics service is active. A first-party, cookie-free visit counter is described in the Privacy Notice. If advertising, sponsorship, affiliate commissions or other material commercial relationships are introduced, they must be clearly disclosed near the relevant content. Paid placement does not purchase a favorable editorial opinion. Advertisers and linked services are responsible for their own offers, availability, terms and privacy practices. A link is not a guarantee or endorsement of every statement on the destination page. We do not control third-party websites.

There are currently no paid subscriptions or purchases in this build. Any future paid service requires clear pricing, renewal, cancellation and refund terms before a transaction; these terms do not authorize an undisclosed charge.

13. Privacy, cookies and local storage

Our Privacy Notice explains account data, essential session cookies, security records, local reading lists, preparedness settings and offline caches. Clearing browser data does not delete server-side forum records. Do not submit sensitive personal information in public posts. Changes involving optional advertising or tracking require appropriate disclosures and consent controls where applicable; accepting these terms is not blanket consent to optional tracking.

14. Availability and disclaimer of warranties

To the extent permitted by applicable law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of uninterrupted operation, error-free information, fitness for a particular purpose or absence of all harmful components. We make reasonable efforts toward accurate sourcing and secure operation, but cannot promise that all material is complete, current or correct or that all misuse will be prevented. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions; those exclusions apply only where lawful. Nothing here disclaims a nonwaivable duty or excuses fraud.

15. Limits of liability

To the extent permitted by applicable law, Afterlight and its operators and contributors are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses arising from use of or inability to use the Service, including loss of data, business opportunities or expected savings. This clause does not exclude or limit liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited, including applicable liability for fraud, intentional misconduct, gross negligence or death/personal injury. No provision removes mandatory consumer rights or makes unlawful conduct lawful. The enforceability of any limit depends on the applicable law and circumstances.

16. Disputes and applicable rights

We encourage good-faith efforts to resolve concerns with the publisher through its configured contact channel. These terms do not impose mandatory arbitration, a class-action waiver or a shortened legal filing deadline. Applicable law and lawful court-jurisdiction rules govern where no valid specific agreement applies. These terms do not select an exclusive court or override a jurisdiction’s mandatory protections.

17. Changes, termination and interpretation

We may update the Service and these terms. The effective date and version identify the current wording. Material changes should be brought to users’ attention, with renewed affirmative acceptance where required; changes do not retroactively eliminate accrued rights. You may stop using the Service at any time. We may discontinue features or restrict accounts for the reasons stated above, subject to applicable law. Clauses intended to apply after account closure, including necessary content permissions, lawful retention, intellectual-property provisions and applicable liability limits, survive only to the extent appropriate and lawful.

If a provision is unenforceable, the remainder continues to the extent permitted by law. Failure to enforce a provision once does not automatically waive it. These terms and the incorporated rules describe the agreement for the current Service; they do not replace rights or obligations that cannot legally be waived.
