Copyright & DMCA
Updated November 3, 2026. Afterlight respects the rights of creators and expects members to do the same. This page explains how to tell us about material on afterlightnews.com or in the AFTERLIGHT news iPhone app that you believe infringes your copyright, under the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), 17 U.S.C. § 512.
Sending a copyright notice
Email support@afterlightnews.com with the subject “DMCA notice” and include:
- Your physical or electronic signature.
- A description of the copyrighted work you believe was infringed.
- The exact web address (URL) of the material, or enough detail for us to find it.
- Your name, mailing address, telephone number and email address.
- A statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law.
- A statement that the information in your notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act for the owner.
When we receive a complete notice, we remove or disable access to the material and tell the member who posted it. Knowingly false claims can make you liable for damages under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f). Before sending a notice, consider whether the use may be fair use, such as commentary, criticism or news reporting.
Sending a counter-notice
If your material was removed and you believe it was a mistake or misidentification, email a counter-notice with the subject “DMCA counter-notice” that includes:
- Your physical or electronic signature.
- A description of the removed material and the URL where it appeared.
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed by mistake or misidentification.
- Your name, address and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for your address (or, if you are outside the United States, any judicial district where Afterlight may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice.
We forward valid counter-notices to the person who sent the original notice. Unless they tell us within 10 business days that they have filed a court action, we may restore the material 10 to 14 business days after receiving the counter-notice.
Repeat infringers
We close the accounts of members who repeatedly infringe others’ copyrights, in appropriate circumstances.
